Gardening Tasks In April
Posted by Jennifer Smith on 1st Apr 2019
Now that spring is here, gardeners are excited to feel warmer weather and get started on planting crops in the garden including carrots, onions, peppers, tomatoes and an array of leafy greens. But, before planting, there are many gardening tasks this April that must be performed to guarantee healthy growing cycles. Here is what needs to be done this month:
Weed Control Is a Must
Get a good set of gardening gloves and start pulling weeds from the garden. Leaving weeds puts plants at risk of being suffocated, as weeds spread like wildfire.
Start Sowing
Sow hardy annuals, herbs and flowers outside including sunflowers, marigolds ( a deer resistant plant) and nasturtiums. Sow lawns and repair patches of grass with healthy soil.
Start watering
While April showers will bring May flowers, it is always a good idea to water plants in the early morning hours before the heat of the sun beams down on plants.
Protect Plants From Deer
April is prime food scavenging season for deer; and they will visit home gardens in search of sprouting plants throughout spring. To keep deer out of gardens, gardeners will need to install deer fencing and act on other deer management strategies including the use of deer repellents and planting deer-resistant flowers like marigolds and daffodils.
