When we think of fall and winter cooking recipes, we think of vegetables that are green, yellow and orange in color to go with the theme of the season. Autumn is the best time of year to plant salad type vegetables, such as leafy greens, that can handle cool climates and traces of frost. Before planting, it's best to do research on the type of plant you wish to grow within your zone.

In October, gardeners can start planting:

  • Beets
  • Broccoli
  • Carrots
  • Kale
  • Peas
  • Lettuce
  • Spinach
  • Kale

Other crops that can be grown at the end of September or early October include: Cauliflower, Rhubarb, Brussels Sprouts, and of course, Squash.
