Bear Activity In Fall
Posted by Jennifer Smith on 27th Sep 2019
Bear spotting is common in spring and summer; but fall is when they go into hyper-drive. This is because they are preparing for winter hibernation (a process called hyperphagia), beginning in November; and they will eat non-stop throughout autumn from home gardens and forests.
A bear has to eat a lot before settling down to sleep for the winter and will eat all day and night to bulk up. According to ReadWriteThink.org website, brown bears can eat up to 90 pounds of food a day during this time.
Bears diet in fall consists of grasses, roots, berries, fish, small animals and insects. They will also sniff around trash cans and picnic areas for human waste and will not say "no" to scraps.
As a preventative measure, farmers and gardeners are advised to protect crops with electric fence for bear deterrence.
