How to Identify a Tick Bite

6th Oct 2020

The easiest way to tell if you’ve been bitten by a tick is if the tick is still embedded in your skin. However, it is possible to be bitten by a tick and be unaware of it until it after it detaches. When a tick bites, it releases an anesthetic which causes the skin to numb and allows the tick to attach without being noticed. After the tick is done feeding, it will detach and move on.

However, the aftermath of the tick may become noticeable. Ticks can carry diseases such as Lyme disease and others. If you notice an abnormal rash on your skin, you should contact your doctor immediately.

If you do happen to notice the tick while it is still attached, remove it as soon as possible. Carefully remove the tick using tweezer while being cautious not to squeeze it. Pull using a steady pace and pressure to prevent the tick from breaking off. If the tick does happen to break apart, make sure you squeeze out the remainder of the tick from the bite location. Monitor the entrance point closely over the next few days to make sure a rash does not occur.

Adding a fence around your home or garden can help prevent the transmission of Lyme disease in your area by keeping the deer away. Deer are the main carrier of ticks that carry Lyme disease. These little insects are not capable of flying or jumping. Instead, they perch themselves on the end of leaves and grass and wait for a host to come close enough to hitch a ride. Being that deer are commonly found in areas where ticks will reside, they have become one of the main modes of transportation for these potentially harmful pests.
