Lyme Disease alone has tripled in the United States over the last two decades making this tick-borne disease the leading vector-borne disease reported in the Northern Hemisphere. The number of reported vector disease cases has risen significantly over the past 20 years in the United States plaguing approximately 300,000 individuals annually.
Now, 45.7 percent of all U.S. counties are reporting cases of Lyme Disease, a 30 percent increase since 1998. Lyme Disease is often overlooked by patients, or mistreated, as Lyme Disease symptoms appear to be flu-like symptoms at first glance. Black-legged ticks are found in mainly woody areas of the United States in 37 states along the Eastern Region.
The Northeast is where ticks are most discovered (14 states); although the black-legged ticks can be found in southern states including Alabama and Florida. Ticks found in Northeast were in leafy debris; and for this reason, it's important not to move firewood or leaves close to properties.
