Growing Hemp In Canada

Posted by Jennifer Smith on 21st Aug 2019

In Canada, growing industrial hemp was legalized in 1998. Eighteen years later, producers still face many challenges. Farmers first have to get a license from the government to grow hemp. Then they can only plant the seeds of specific cultivars, or types, of hemp.

Hemp growing in the United States is booming with a 368 percent increase since August 2018. This includes an increase in acreage from farmers that are not just growing vegetables, but are hemp growing, too.

According to new data from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), US farmers more than quadrupled the land planted with hemp in the past year, from 27,424 acres in August 2018 to 128,320 acres today. ("As Demand For CBD Explodes, US Farmers Are Seeking Dollar Signs," Quartz)

Growing hemp is easy; but outdoor cultivators will need to take the steps to ensure they have proper supplies for growing hemp. They will need to have strong irrigation systems in place; dry areas that will allow direct sunlight on the crops; and deer fencing, to reduce the sight of deer, and trellis netting to hold the standing crop.
